It can be challenging to make sure you’ve covered all the bases during the tubing and hose selection process. Have you considered all the elements involved with the application? Temperatures, chemicals, pressures, flexibility needs? In Tubing & Hose Buying Tips we’ll address common selection factors, one at a time, in each issue of extrusions.

How soft or hard should your application’s tubing or hose be? Tubing hardness is measured as its durometer, and different scales, namely Shore A, Shore D, and Rockwell R, are commonly used for plastic and rubber materials. The lower the scale number, the softer and more flexible the material will be.

Centuries ago the people of South America used latex, the sap-like extract from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), to make rubber balls. They played a game with the balls and later used latex in shoes and shields. Today latex is produced commercially and is the source for products such as surgical gloves, balloons, exercise equipment, and, of course, tubing.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and polyurethane (sometimes abbreviated as PU) are thermoplastic materials that can be formed into a variety of shapes, including tubing and reinforced hose. Each material has its benefits and drawbacks.

While no single plastic tubing material can meet every application requirement, PVC meets many needs. It provides a broad range of chemical and corrosion resistance, excellent abrasion and wear resistance, outstanding flow characteristics, and rubber-like flexibility.
