Heat Related Terms

When it comes to plastics, what's the difference between flame retardant and self-extinguishing? What's a burn rating? Is heat resistance the same as thermal resistance?

Read on for definitions of Heat Related Terms.

Anneal – A process of heating a material to a pre-determined temperature below its melting point, holding it for a pre-determined length of time, and then gradually cooling it in order to relax stress caused during the molding process without distorting the shape

Burn Rating – A classification describing a material's burning characteristics after test samples have been exposed to a specified test flame under controlled laboratory conditions; for example, a burn rating to which some plastics are tested is UL94 HB (a standard Underwriters Laboratories' test method)

Flame Retardants – Materials that reduce the tendency of plastics to burn; typically added to the plastic during compounding

Flammability – The behavior of various plastics while burning; tests designed to evaluate flammability encompass six categories: ignitability, burn rate, heat evolution, smoke production, byproducts of combustion, and endurance of burning

Heat Deflection Temperature (or Heat Distortion Temperature) – The temperature at which a polymer or plastic sample deforms under a specified load

Heat Resistance – The ability to withstand the effects of exposure to high temperature; also known as Thermal Resistance

Self-Extinguish – A material's ability to stop burning once the source of the flame is removed

Thermal – Of or relating to heat

Thermoplastic – A material which, in its final state as a finished article, can be repeatedly softened with heat without significantly changing its physical properties when cooled; in the article's softened state it may be re-shaped

Thermoset – A material which, in its final state as a finished article, cannot be re-softened to change its shape or physical properties when cooled

Welding – Joining pieces by one of several processes often involving heat
