Cam Operated Couplings

Our third fittings article focuses on cam operated couplings. These are known by several names including cam and groove, cam groove, cam op, cam lever, cam lock and simply cam couplings or cam fittings.

They're intended for quick and easy connection and disconnection. No tools are needed. The design involves a coupler and a grooved adapter. Each coupler has two cams — movable pieces that fit into the groove, rotate and lock the two fitting components into place, ensuring a proper fit and a tight seal against the gasket inside. Many cam couplings have a retaining pin that can be used to make sure the cams remain locked in place.

Food & Beverage

The word "food" encompasses a lot of products — dairy items, beverages, granular or powdered products, sticky or viscous substances, fresh ingredients; the list goes on and on. And when it comes to processing food, tubing and reinforced hose is often needed.

Like the pharmaceutical industry, the food industry is highly regulated. Raw ingredients, equipment and finished products must meet guidelines and standards involving the FDA, USDA, 3-A SSI (3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc.), NSF (National Sanitation Foundation), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and/or CDC (Center for Disease Control). Hence the tubing and hose through which food is processed must also meet guidelines and standards.

Product Comparison — Hot Bond® vs. Separate Pieces

Hot Bond is the name of the process used by NewAge Industries to thermally bond two or more sections of tubing together. The procedure uses heat and proprietary machinery to join lengths of plastic tubing into a neat ribbon structure. Naturally, separate lengths of tubing can usually be employed in an application, but Hot Bond addresses concerns such as:

  • HotBondInstallation expenses and time — Hot Bond eliminates the routing of multiple tubing lines
  • A professional appearance — there are no superfluous portions of tubing, so dimensions and fit are more exact
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting — it's easy to see and trace lines
