How It's Done – Tubing Inspection
When you place an order for tubing, you naturally expect to receive what you ordered – tubing that's the right size, right length, right material, right color, right shape. And how does NewAge help ensure that this continually happens? We rely on the expertise of our Quality Assurance Team and their careful and thorough inspections.
NewAge manufactures tubing from several materials, so there are various production areas including clean rooms dedicated to those particular materials. Team members who are responsible for making the products perform inspections, but our Quality Technicians do their own in-process inspections as well. They check the compound being used to make the tubing, the I.D. and O.D. (inner diameter and outer diameter), wall thickness, and layline (printing on the tubing) if applicable. For braid-reinforced hose, technicians will also verify that the braid pattern and any longitudinal tracer lines are to specifications. These inspections are all in addition to our in-line laser monitoring equipment that constantly checks critical dimensional specifications in our manufactured products.
We outsource some of the products we sell, so what about tubing that we don't manufacture? That undergoes an even more rigorous inspection. Why? Because we're not there every step of the way during the product's manufacturing process. It's our job to make sure that the tubing we send to our customers is a high-quality item and is exactly what they ordered, whether we produced it or not.
Outsourced products are inspected upon arrival for the same things our in-house manufactured products are such as size, layline, wall and color. Technicians use different calibrated instruments – pin gauges, dial calipers (both analog and digital), wall gauges and durometers – for inspection. They even have special tools for certain products: custom-made fixtures or jigs to check heat-formed shapes, pi tape for large sizes, and a borescope capable of video and still-image capture to inspect the interior of multi-layer, opaque hose.
The Quality Team retains samples of particular products to check against repeat orders. For instance, if a customer orders Nylobrade® braid-reinforced PVC hose with an outer layer tinted to their corporate logo's transparent blue color, Quality will retain several samples from each order to have on hand for comparison with repeat orders. They'll make certain the colors match before releasing the hose for shipment to the customer.
