How It's Done – Tubing Inspection
NewAge Industries offers molded thermoset products, most of which are made for the company's AdvantaPure® customers. The majority of these molded products are clean room manufactured. Examples include Single-Use tubing manifolds, tubing ends, connectors (tee's, wye's, crosses, reducers), BioClosure® container closures, and AdvantaLabel® hose labels.
These items are used in critical applications such as vaccine manufacture, biologics production, and drug development. Proper, thorough inspection is crucial because the end products affect people's lives.
NewAge's Quality team conducts first article inspection. A quality technician is stationed in the clean room and inspects the first molded part produced. Depending on the product, the technician will look at tubing length, fitting style and attachment, closure shape and size, and/or proper labeling. The technician determines whether the part meets the drawing's specifications and other requirements.
After this initial inspection approval, the production run begins. Sample parts are inspected during the run, and adjustments are made if necessary.
Next comes bagging (double bagging in most cases), package identification using labels, and final inspection using a light box. The entire run is checked using the light box, which makes it easy to see any cuts in the tubing or debris within the bags. A visual examination of the bag seals is also done using this inspection method. No parts are released until the entire production run is finished and all inspections are completed.
Many molded products are sent to an outside vendor for gamma irradiation prior to shipment to a customer. In these cases, an irradiation-sensitive orange label is placed on the outside of the bag to aid in identifying its irradiation status. This label turns red after irradiation. When a shipment of irradiated products is returned to NewAge, a team of two technicians inspects the bags for any damage and verifies that the gamma ray dosage reads correctly on the irradiator's certification of processing.
Product quality and process quality are crucial at NewAge. In fact, the company works with the belief that each employee is part of the Quality team. Everyone is responsible for making sure that customers' expectations are met or exceeded. It's the best way to keep customers happy and people safe.
