Comparing PVC and Silicone for Brewing
There’s a lot of discussion when it comes to the different tubing and hose materials used in the brewing process and whether it’s better to opt for PVC or silicone – the two most popular materials – for your application. PVC is often selected for its glass-like clarity, ease of use, and relatively low price. However, it does have its drawbacks, as it has a comparatively low maximum temperature and should only be used on the cold side of brewing. Silicone is great for transferring hot wort and is odorless and tasteless, but it can sometimes be overlooked due to price and its translucency rather than the transparent appearance of PVC.
Despite what may be considered a disadvantage, each material still has its place in the brewing process. PVC options are ideal for drain, discharge, and other non-critical fluid path transfer. While silicone options can be more expensive, they are sterilizable and can be reused, and their advantages often outweigh any disadvantages.
